There are two types of SEPA direct debits: basic scheme direct debit (CORE) for any type of customer and direct debit business scheme (B2B), exclusively for use between companies, freelancers or professionals. These instruments allow a common collection and payment system for all states adhering to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) so that they can be managed with the same ease, security and cost, both within our borders and in the European market. The business type, unlike the basic scheme, allows significantly reduced return periods.
SEPA’s geographical scope comprises the 27 member states of the European Union, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the Vatican City State.
Direct debit allows for automated electronic handling of sales collection via a debit or charge to the payer’s account.
Requisites for issuing direct debits under the basic system (CORE):
The operations must be in euros
The issuer and debtor must be legal persons and/or private individuals.
All entities operating with debits must accept the basic system.
Formalisation of a direct debit mandate/order between the issuer and debtor prior to the debit. Validity of the direct debit orders signed prior to the migration.
It is compulsory to conserve the mandates and all their modifications or cancellations while they can be required to justify the existence of authorisation for a collection.
An ISO 20022 SEPA XML 19-14 CORE file format is required, with additional data on the type of debit (first, recurrent, single or last) and the mandate (date of signature).
The IBAN code becomes the standardised code of the debtor account.
Debits will be submitted 3 business days in advance.
Return periods:
5 days for any reason.
Up to 8 weeks for a debtor customer order.
More than 8 weeks and up to 13 months for non-authorised payments (on the customer’s order). There exists the option of rejecting a return during the period by submitting a copy of the mandate in effect.
It is a type of SEPA direct debit, designed specifically for monetary transactions between legal persons (companies or self-employed persons), with which a homogeneous payment system is established in the adhered states that enables the management of collections and payments with the same ease, security and cost, both within our borders and in the European market.
With the business or B2B type, the term for the return of unpaid debts is reduced to only three days, which improves your commercial risk and the management of unpaid debts, while reducing the risk of default.
The B2B scheme is optional. In the case of a transaction with a non-adhered entity, the mandatory SEPA CORE scheme will be used. You can view the updated list of member countries and entities (both in this country and from the rest of the European Economic Area) that adhere to the B2B scheme at the following link of the European Payments Council (EPC).
Requirements for issuing direct debits in the business-to-business (B2B) scheme:
Transactions must be in euro
The issuer and debtor must be legal persons and/or non-consumer self-employed workers.
Prior formalisation of a new direct debit mandate/order between the issuer and debtor specifying the acceptance of a B2B-mode operation and the latter’s waiver of the right to reimbursement once the debit has been performed. No reimbursement is possible.
The issuer’s obligation to preserve the mandates and all their modifications and cancellations for as long as they may be required to justify the existence of authorisation for a collection.
An ISO 20022 SEPA XML 19-44 B2B file format is required, with additional data on the type of debit (first, recurrent, single or last) and the mandate (date of signature).
Use the IBAN code as a standardised identifier for the debtor’s account instead of the CAC (customer account code).
Submission of the debits three business days in advance.
The entities will request authorisation from the drawee before the debit is performed.
